Unholy war
I’ve always been
Fighting this
Unholy war.
.
This sinful
Push and pull,
Between good
And bad,
Between me
And me.
.
The voices
That beg to
Be heard,
That whisper
In my ears
Words of
Malice and
Callous rage,
And I shield
My ears
In some half-
Hearted attempt
At defiance;
But they ring
And echo through
Every synapse and
Capillary that
Cuts through
My heaving flesh.
No time for rest,
When the drums
Of war are
Ringing out.
.
When the horn
Is sounded,
And stampedes of
Severed horses
Are ploughing through
Fields of flesh,
And the cries
Of cursed soldiers,
Fill the blazing sky,
And beat to the ringing
Of the belting
Battle drums.
.
Fighting for god,
For glory.
But there is no
Glory to be
Forged from this
Bloodshed.
.
Still, I don’t know
Who I am without it.
Without the drums
Pulsating through
My limbs,
Smoke filling
My hollow lungs,
Cannons roaring
Through my
Vibrating skull -
One sip, one puff,
And I’m me again.
Not really me,
But something - elevated.
All the violence
Flows out of me,
The fields soak
With more blood,
And the sky
Turns to ash
In my mouth.
.
The unholiest treachery -
For eyes that bleed
And lips that sin,
There is no solace waiting,
No ordained win.
